What is respect for students?

Updated: Nov 9, 2018

An atmosphere of mutual respect means that students also treat each other properly. The result is a classroom where more learning takes place as students feel safe, motivated and, of course, respected. Achieving this atmosphere takes considerable effort on the part of the teacher as well as the students.

However nowadays based on the rights that children have, they have taken respect for granted hence we have teachers being harmed by students as they do feel it is within the rights to do so,

Teachers been abused by students

The way that South Africa has lost it's roots on how students don't get to understand the importance of respecting their elders. Watching all social media with students hitting the teachers and rudely responding to them. I was born and raised in South Africa and from my knowledge an older person is like your mom or dad. However children of today have no respect at all, no patience and they can even beat an older person. It is distracting how this world is turning to be in every level. I am sadden for the teachers that are piled with a lot of work to prepare for the students and having inspectors to valuate their work from department of Education but do not considers what happens on the daily basis for this children to listen and concentrate in class. Picture this, one distraction in class can cost the whole period of worked prepared and remember each day is scheduled as per planning. Which drags the teachers schedule as well as other students in class all because of bad behavior.

Now picture this video.

Students have nerve to beat a teacher up at the streets. The person making the video is also a student. Amusement made out of an old teacher. Social media is meant to educate children instead they use it to humiliate teachers.

Hit back, Cosas tells schoolchildren dated 16 March 2011 which stated that.

The Congress of South Africa Students (Cosas) on Wednesday called on schoolchildren to hit back when they are being hit by teachers.

“We call on all students to fight fire with fire. When teachers hit you, you must hit back,” provincial chairperson Ntsako Mogobe told reporters in Pretoria.

He defended his statement by saying teachers were failing in their duty to teach.

South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) regional chairperson Moss Senye, also the principal of Soweto’s Meadowlands High School, appeared in court on Monday for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old pupil last month. Soweto teachers missed school to attend Senye’s hearing.
